Dante’s Inferno: Contrapasso
Expect No Mercy What goes around comes around. When sinners reach hell they are forced to experience the counter-suffering of contrapasso. For each sin, Dante gives a specific punishment relating to that sin. Some of these sins include violence towards self, violence towards God, sorcery, and hypocrisy. For the despicable lives they lived on earth, they are doomed to suffer relating consequences for all of eternity. ââ¬Å"No green leaves, but rather black in color, no smooth branches, but twisted and entangled, no fruit, but thorns of poison bloomed instead. (XIII, 4) No longer humans, but trees, they stand in a fruitless wood, being eaten by half-woman, half-bird creatures called Harpies. These sinners have committed Violence against themselves. They destroyed their bodies on earth so they have been denied any resemblance to a body in hell. Harpies are perched on them, eating their leaves as they scream in pain. When leaves or branches are ripped from them, they bleed and feel as t hough limbs are being torn from their bodies.Their wounds heal so as to reoccur, making it so the harpies may eat them eternally. This is not a reasonable form of justice, as once thought in Danteââ¬â¢s time. The Christian church has changed its opinions on suicide since the publishing of Danteââ¬â¢s work. Once not even awarded a Christian burial, people who commit suicide are now considered not in the right state of mind. Since they have suffered in life, they should not be forced to suffer for eternity in death. Despite the undeserving sufferers previously noted, many of the people found in hell deserve to be there. The blasphemers have committed the sin of violence against God. They have either cursed God or offended God directly during their lifetimes. These sinners lay on their backs in burning sand staring up at the skies as fiery flakes rain down on them. They committed sins against God, therefore they shall spend eternity staring up at him and accepting his wrath. Viole nce is horrid and the punishments in hell show how it can come back to you in death. But even deeper into hell the sins get worse, as do the punishments. There are things that people are not supposed to see during their lives on earth. The future is one of these things. The first sinners found in the eighth circle of hell attempted to see the future using forbidden means such as black magic. The punishment that these fortune tellers are forced to endure is they walk around forever with their heads twisted facing backwards, only able to look behind them. Their eyes are filled with tears so anything that they could see is completely blurred. ââ¬Å"You see how he has made his back his chest: because he wished to see too far ahead, he sees behind and walks a backward track. (XX, 37) These punishments are perfectly fitting to the sins they have committed. These so-called sorcerers spent their lives in the twisted world of magic, so it is only fitting that they are twisted themselves in h ell. This is the torture that awaits them in hell, and theyââ¬â¢ve earned every bit of it. Deeper into hell there are sinners who twisted the truth, this is where the hypocrites are found. They deceived people during their lives by pretending to have beliefs or virtues that appealed to others. Now they slowly trod around wearing cloaks that look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside they are lined with heavy lead, that weighs the sinners down. ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢The orange-gilded cloaks are thick with lead so heavy that it makes us, who are the scales it hangs on, creak as we walk. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (XXIII, 100) Since they hid their true selves in life they must walk forever, hiding the weight of their deceit which they must carry for all of eternity. If they stop walking, the lead gets hotter and hotter until they start moving again.Being eaten for all of eternity, staring into the skies as fiery flakes rain down, heads twisted on backwards and hidden weight that must be carried forever are some of the punishments in hell that await sinners. These specific punishments relate or contrast to the sins of those who suffer them. Contrapasso is the passing of just punishment for sins, and punishments that relate to the sins are the most fitting. For the damage they have done on earth, these offenders are fated to suffer the abuse they have earned themselves in hell.

To What Extent Is Scotland A Divided Society - 1200 Words
To what extent is Scotland a divided society? We tend to think of Scottish society, or any modern society, as maintaining a social structure in which we live. This social structure is made up of a shared democratic process and political construction as well as common experiences. From the aspect of social policy, this view of society means that we also share the same benefits and responsibilities of living in a welfare state. However, this structure, being so socially and often culturally rigid, can be said as being fundamentally flawed. Although, as a society, there are many factors that unite the Scottish population, there are also numerous aspects that divide us. We have many different histories, traditions and lifestyles all of which result in different needs. Due to these different needs there is increased recognition within social policy debates that we live in a divided society (Platt 2011). Many social divisions exist in Scotland ranging from class to gender and sexuality. The social divisions explored in this essay will be race and ethnicity. The 2011 Scottish census showed that ethnic minorities make up 7% of the population. Despite this, there are a lot of different ethnic minority groups in Scotland and many of these groups are subject to discrimination and can often be disadvantaged in most, if not all, areas of their life. Sexism in Music Videos Essay Example For Students
Sexism in Music Videos Essay The music videos that are on television today and on the internet show an image that is far from reality. Women are shown as very weak and unable to fend for themselves, especially against a manââ¬â¢s advances. This is not a good message to send out, especially if younger children are seeing these videos. Women and girls have so many good qualities and abilities and it is a shame that through these music videos they are shown to be weak and vulnerable. The women in the music videos are always being cheated on or abused in some way. If a woman is not going through these ordeals she is seen as a sex object. The women are sexually objectified, and to represent women as strictly sexual objects is wrong for so many reasons. The woman should embrace her sexuality and who she is as a woman, but not in a manner to be put on display and flaunted for the lusty eyes of men. A woman should be able to choose whom she is desirous for and whom she wants to pursue. Women should not feel as though they have to be sexual in order to be heard. The current music videos however encourage girls and women to flaunt only the sexual sides of themselves. These videos do not show women as being empowered, or intelligent, or of good character. They are often the victims of menââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ abuse and ridicule within these videos. This then tells a generation of females that they have no worth unless they are submissive and offer themselves as a means of sexual gratification to others. You never see the women in these videos taking charge over the men, they never stand up to the men and they always, no matter what abuse may be shown in these videos, always take the man back. Women in todayââ¬â¢s music videos are never seen as independent and self-assured and this helps to create a generation of scare and unable women. They are unable to say no, they are unable to take a stand, they are unable to see themselves as more than just sexual objects. The men in todayââ¬â¢s music videos are seen as dominant and aggressive. More often than not the men are seen as the champions in the videos. They are shown as the dominant as the dominant aggressors. The men are the ones portrayed as violent and ruthless and in these videos that is seen as okay. The men are seen as violent also against women at times and the conquerors of sexual conquests. In many of the videos men are seen with their shirts off and with bulging muscles. They are then seen seducing women and greedily lusting over them, and as always in the videos, the women fall for it. The men are never rejected and they always are seen as having their way with women in the videos. The man also, unlike the woman, is always seen as having the money. The men are always seen as the rich ones, with the money, the chains and jewelry, and the fancy cars. Women are never portrayed as having anything except for having the man. The videos seem to show that anything the women do have s because of the man and because of his, ââ¬Å"awesomenessâ⬠. Men also are allowed to treat women in these videos as sex objects. The men the hunters of sexual conquests and the women are the conquered. The women in these videos have no say in this, and they are always seen as being wooed by the men and they of course submit. The women are seen as being proud of their certain parts because the man finds favor in it, she has no opinion. Parents need to be very careful in what their children watch. If a parent does not use discretion with television, music videos and the internet, then children will grow up believing some real bad things. .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .postImageUrl , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:hover , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:visited , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:active { border:0!important; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:active , .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udec3520d597c6daea24545cd79daa30a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music playing EssayThey will grow to believe that man are allowed to be abusive and be sexually aggressive with women. They will believe that the girl or woman should always give in to the boy or manââ¬â¢s advances and that violence and aggression is okay There are many sources out there that help parents protect their children from harmful websites such as Net Nanny which blocks and controls the use of inappropriate websites. Parents should begin to encourage their children to read and play more instead of watching television. Playtime and reading fosters a childââ¬â¢s imagination and helps put their minds in an appropriate state of mind and of thinking. Every responsible parent needs to make sure their children are safe from the damaging effects of television, the media, and the internet. My Experience She sits with a pencil in her manus and a thoughtful look on her face. She shifts in her concatenation and a sudden freshness visible radiations up her profile as inspiration falls on her. Without trouble, she begins pigment her life. . . That is me, Hannah Michell. I have lived in Seoul all of my life, with the exclusion of the occasional vacation. And every bit nerve-racking as it is at times, I do nt believe that I would be rather the same individual if I had grown up elsewhere. To me, who I am and who I will go are really of import. Certain events act upon me to get down believing about my life, and although I have non yet genuinely figured out who I am, I think I know where I m headed. I ve lived my whole life in Korea being treated like a British individual, but in England, people ever acknowledge me as an Asiatic miss. Sometimes I want to give up being half of something ; for one time I want to be something whole. On the other manus, I could neer of all time give up being either British or Korean. There are alone facets of both civilizations that I greatly appreciate. Over clip, I have realized that I can, in fact, be both British and Korean without missing anything. Despite this consciousness and my love for these two states, I think when I m older I ll merely populate in a wholly different state such as Spain, so I can avoid taking between England and Korea. I live with my female parent, her best friend Sang-wha, and my female parent s pupil Woo-Joo. My female parent and male parent divorced a few old ages ago, and now I m populating with merely adult females. I frequently resent this agreement. I frequently reach out for a male figure, and although my male parent is about on weekends, it s non the same. My parents divorce had a great impact on me. I withdrew from the universe and lapsed into silence and periods of deep idea about such things as love, life, decease, and myself. These four thoughts all seemed to be connected, and I began to chew over more and more. I was lucky to hold a good friend who was traveling through the same experience as me. We had many conversations about great things, and easy I began to understand more about the life environing me. At this peculiar clip, I besides became really drawn to nature, for it seemed to keep many replies to my inquiries. After seting to household alterations, I began to concentrate on my instruction once more, which I had neglected. I received my simple instruction at Seoul British School, and I besides went off to get oning school in England for a twelvemonth. Now I attend Seoul Foreign School, and I must acknowledge that I enjoy school life here. Socially, there are divisions between the Korean pupils and the foreign pupils at school. We spend our trim clip individually because we lead such different lives, and it s easier to go friends with person who understands your civilization. I socialize with the foreign pupils because I am more comfy with their relaxed, unfastened attitude. They are so much more accepting of one s eccentricities, while the Korean pupils tend to be more traditional. Personally, I do nt believe I could easy go friends with the Korean pupils even if I tried. The lone thing that fusss me about these divisions, nevertheless, is the exclusion and sole attitudes among both groups. I believe in love and friendly relationship. I believe that they are of import, and that without them we would non last. My friendly relationships are of import to me and I would travel to great lengths to assist a friend in demand. My closest friends at the minute are Sooki, Kristin, and Julia. We portion large parts of our lives and have tonss of merriment together. The one friendly relationship that I value like no other is with my best friend Julia. She is witty lovingness, clever, and she says the right words of comfort at all the right times. Julia and I talk a batch about love. We frequently stay up all dark watching romantic films and discoursing them afterwards. We besides talk about our fellows and our hereafter programs. In the hereafter, I would wish to be a author. I am particularly interested in composing novels and poesy. For now, the most of import thing is my individuality. I need to cognize who I am before I can make out to others. It is difficult to acquire to cognize people when I do nt truly cognize myself. I hope one twenty-four hours I will wake up and all of a sudden recognize who I am so that I can get down to touch other peoples lives. Not merely can kids s psychological jobs be traced into maturity, but grownups who are confronted with their parents divorce are similarly vulnerable to psychological battles related to the divorce. That is, parental divorce after childhood ( i.e. , between ages 17 and 31 ) has been associated with higher unease tonss at age 33 when compared with tonss of grownups from integral households ( Furstenberg A ; Kiernan, 2005 ) . Thus, immature grownups seem non to be immune to psychological troubles merely because their parents divorce occurred after childhood. Laumann-Billings and Emery ( 2006 ) created a alone step of nonclinical degrees of psychological hurt ( i.e. , Painful Feelings about Divorce graduated table ) . They found that resilient immature grownups from divorced households endorsed psychological hurt points related to their parents divorce. These points assessed concepts such as on-going feelings of loss and forsaking, angst related to events such as graduation when both parents would be present, and a general sense that life has been harder because of the divorce ( Laumann-Billings A ; Emery, 2006 ) . Why do some kids seem comparatively unharmed by their parents divorce when other kids of divorce become entrenched in divorce-related battles? Most attempts to explicate this variableness have centered around five theoretical positions: the loss of the noncustodial parent, the accommodation of the tutelary parent, interparental struggle, economic adversity, and the cumulative consequence of nerve-racking life alterations. Consequences of a meta-analysis have revealed that the overall consequence size for each theory is little, proposing that these theories lack full explanatory power. One ground for this modest explanatory power might be that each theory focuses on a kid s exposure to specific stressors as the mechanism responsible for that kid s single psychological maladjustment. In contrast, get bying theory suggests that the effectivity or deficiency thereof of an on-going, organic procedure of assessment and header is related to psychological adjustment-not simply the exposure to specific events. More specifically, get bying theory assumes that people are purposive persons who actively seek to make and prolong significance in their lives ( Amato, Cheadle, 2005 ) . As people work to prolong the countries of life from which they derive significance, they appraise life events in footings of their relationship to these countries of significance. Life events become stressors when they are perceived as threatening, harmful, or disputing to an person s deepest, most important facets of life. In response to these stressors, people engage in get bying activities as they work to keep on to their important objects or transform these countries of significance in a manner that integrates the nerve-racking event into their orienting system or general manner of nearing the universe ( Amato, Cheadle, 2005 ) . Published research on get bying theory and parental divorce appears to be limited to a smattering of surveies. Additionally, they found that turning away ( negative ) get bying partly mediated the relationship between negative events and psychological symptoms and active ( positive ) get bying moderated the nexus between negative events and behavior jobs. Sandler, Tein, Metha, Wolchik, and Ayers ( 2006 ) found that similar links between active and avoidant header and psychological accommodation were mediated by get bying efficaciousness, which they defined as the kid s belief that he or she has some control over the state of affairs. Take together, these surveies suggested that get bying theory is outstanding for kids s experiences of parental divorce. It is non surprising that similarities exist among them as the household is the most basic unit in all societies and divorce shingles non merely the foundation of this societal karyon but has far-reaching impact on the remainder of society. The grounds most surveies stated were deficiency of communicating and mutual exclusiveness. Those who are unmarried will be afraid of doing the determination to get married if the tendency shows that matrimonies are neglecting. Children from broken places carry cicatrixs of insecurity that can impact their capacity to hold long term relationships ( Furstenberg A ; Kiernan, 2005 ) . Therefore, it is of import on the one manus to raise an consciousness among the young person on the accomplishments needed to hold permanent matrimonies, so that they do nt get down married life with high outlooks and a low sense of duty and on the other manus societal policies need to assist disassociate adult females and their kids to readapt their lives to normalcy and be accepted without any stigma in society. Family kineticss that increase the likeliness of subsequently divorce first act to increase the mental wellness jobs of dependent kids. Controling for these predivorce differences, the event of parental divorce is accompanied by higher degrees of kid anxiety/depression and, for kids populating in extremely dysfunctional households, lower degrees of kid antisocial behaviour ( Furstenberg A ; Kiernan, 2005 ) . A process-oriented attack to the effects of parental divorce on child mental wellness bases to progress well this field of cognition, by enabling research workers to spot more clearly how child mental wellness is unambiguously affected by kid and household features that precede and predict matrimonial disintegration, every bit good as effects that flow straight from the divorce event and emerging subsequent stressors. Help Restore Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem The fact that immature people have non to the full developed their header accomplishments is a perplexing factor in finishing grief work. The ego construct has several constituents, but two of import 1s are personal control and personal exposure. Children need to come to footings with life events to develop autonomy and a sense of command. If heartache is non resolved, kids are more susceptible to emphasize ( Furstenberg A ; Kiernan, 2005 ) . Counseling is indispensable to a disenfranchised, immature sorrowing individual. By being available, encouraging and beef uping bing relationships, and assisting to develop new 1s, the counsellor will help the sorrowing individual to restore a sense of ego. Counselors can promote pupils to acknowledge grieving as a ripening procedure for doing positive alterations so that they can emerge more cognizant, more sensitive, and more resilient ( Chen, George, 2005 ) . Rituals as Critical Tools Rituals are a powerful curative tool for deciding heartache. Ritual is a specific behaviour or activity that gives symbolic look to certain feelings and ideas of the histrion separately or as a group. Unfortunately, disenfranchised bereaved individuals are frequently denied the rites because the heartache is unrecognised ( Chen, George, 2005 ) . Nevertheless, an debut to ritual may function to link the kid to his feelings. It may be habitually repeated or a erstwhile experience. They can be utile in helping kids to accept the world of the loss, showing and working through feelings attendant to the loss, and the attach toing undertakings of sorrowing. The expressive humanistic disciplines and play therapies offer many schemes that could be incorporated into the counsellor s work with kids. Some suggested techniques to show heartache that have been found to be helpful include pulling, function playing, composing letters and verse forms, diary authorship, and other types of commemoratio ns. Decision Society is ever germinating and merely as assorted systems like the political organisations, economic establishments, etc are affected by alteration, so besides does the household have to maintain up with the new developments. The societal solidarity as Durkheim described is organic in modern societies where each section of society helps stabilise the other in crisis. Divorce, as we see it, is a structural job that has afflicted immature married twosomes ( in their mid-twentiess ) over a period of clip. Statisticss have besides shown that important proportions of young person do non go on beyond five old ages of matrimony. While, society has tried through formal and informal establishments to run into the demands of the household there is demand for more alteration. Media has a duty to portray matrimony in a more favourable visible radiation and demo how struggles can be resolved, alternatively of movies that depict opprobrious hubbies and demanding married womans. Problems are seen in the movies but solutions are seldom offered in these telecasting series. Thus, they give the viewing audiences the feeling that the issues can neer be resolved. Finally, the household has to play a stronger function in the socialisation of the kids. It is besides of import for parents to pass more clip with their kids to transfuse in them values and norms that will maintain them together in ulterior life. They have to larn communicating accomplishments and struggle declaration as these two accomplishments are the pillars that will halt the roof from fall ining in the matrimonial place. Children through early socialisation demand to be taught regard and cooperation with the other sex. Boys should non be favored in parental intervention, as it prepares these male childs to anticipate superior functions in big life. Different establishments in a society demand to work together to cut down the rate of divorce. School kids experience many losingss, among them are disfranchised heartache losingss. Students can non disregard their losingss ; they must be acknowledged, grieved, and resolved. Some losingss are easy resolved, others take drawn-out gri eving and a great trade of clip and work. Counselors, by going sensitive to these peculiar issues and by supplying services and implementing groups as a vehicle for mending, can help pupils in sing a healthy recovery procedure. Confronting loss and grieving are worlds of life. Helping pupils to admit and get by with these worlds is a necessary and hard undertaking. School counsellors can go a powerful force in assisting pupils to cover positively with their multiple losingss. Students must be made cognizant that where there is attachment there is loss, and where there is loss there is heartache, a normal and cosmopolitan experience, repeatedly encountered.

Introduction to Human Development Essay Example Introduction to Human Development Essay Introduction to Human Development Essay INTRODUCTION ââ¬Å"The human beingâ⬠¦ the most sophisticated, amazing and wondrous creation in this earth. If one would take a peek at whatââ¬â¢s inside his human body, heââ¬â¢ll be amazed to see hundreds of bones, miles of blood vessels and trillions of cells, all working together so he could be healthy and in perfect shape. Each organ, each body part, each a miracleâ⬠¦ Each a piece of evidence of Godââ¬â¢s mighty providence. â⬠This lesson familiarizes you with the principles and stages of human growth, maturation and development. It discusses how humans grow, develop, change and adapt to their environment throughout their life span. Warm-Up Did you know that there are 26 billion cells in a new born baby and about 50 trillion cells in an adult? Cells are responsible for supplying you with the energy you need, transporting oxygen around your body and moving your body parts. Indeed, every single cell in your body helps you maintain vitality and life. BASIC CONCEPTS 1. Human Development refers to the biological and psychological development of the human being throughout the lifespan. It consists of the development from infancy, childhood, and adolescence, adulthood to old age. . Development refers to the qualitative, progressive series of changes in an orderly and coherent fashion leading to maturation 3. Growth refers to quantitative changes in an individual as he progresses in chronological age. 4. Maturation is the process by which heredity exerts its influence long after birth. 5. Genetics is the science of heredity. It originated with the discovery by Gregor Mendel that hereditary characters are determined by f actors transmitted without change and in predictable fashion from one generation to the next. 6. Heredity is the passing on of physical or mental characteristics from parents to offspring through the genes. 7. Gene is a unit of heredity; a segment of the DNA which contains the instructions for the development of a particular inherited characteristic. There are about 30,000 genes that contain chemical instructions. The chemical instructions in the genes program the development of millions of individual parts into a complex body and brain. 8. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a nucleic acid which occurs in combination with protein in the chromosomes, which contains the genetic instructions. It consists of four nitrogenous bases (adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine), a sugar (2-deoxy-D- ribose), and phosphoric acid, arranged in a regular structure- (two chains twisted round each other in the form of a double helix). 9. Nucleic acids are large molecules produced by living cells which store genetic information, and composed of a chain of nucleotides. Two forms are: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) which is found primarily in the nucleus and ribonucleic acid (RNA), found in the nucleus and cytoplasm. 10. Chromosomes are threads within the nucleus of a cell which are the carriers of genetic material, consisting of DNA and various types of protein (histones). They occur in pairs a normal human body cell has 46 chromosomes: 22 pairs of autosomes together with one matching pair of X chromosomes in females (the 23rd pair- XX) and one mismatching pair, the X and Y sex chromosomes in males (the 23rd pair-XY) 11. Sex chromosome is the 23rd pair of chromosomes represented differently in the sexes, and responsible for the genetic determination of the sex of an individual. There are 1,000 genes in each chromosome. 12. Gamete is a specialized reproductive cell that fuses with another gamete of the opposite sex during fertilization, to form a zygote. Gametes are usually differentiated into male (sperm) and female (egg, ovum). 13. Sexual Reproduction is the act or process of producing offspring through sexual intercourse or artificial insemination. The Stages of Reproduction: 1. During ovulation period, females release and deposit sex chromosomes in the uterus. In the reproduction process, the male releases sperm cells that contain either X or Y chromosomes. The first male chromosome that meets and unites with the egg determines the gender of the offspring. If Y chromosome from the male first unites with the egg (which is an X chromosome), the offspring is male (XY). But if an X chromosome coming from the male first unites (XX), the gender of the offspring is female. 2. The successful sperm cell penetrates inside the ovum. The tail of the sperm separates to the head during this process. The nucleus of the sperm cell will then unite with the nucleus of the ovum and undergo a process called fertilization. The 23 chromosomes from the sperm cell will pair with the 23 chromosomes from the egg cell and the resulting zygote starts life with 46 chromosomes. . When the zygote is about to divide, chromosome replication and cell division arise wherein chromosomes and genes are doubled. All cells except the reproductive cells receive identical inheritance. The process of cell division continues with the chromosomes being always replicated as described. 4. Sometimes, instead of remaining together as parts of a single organism, the cells separate. Th ey develop to form identical twins. Siamese twins come from an incomplete separation of the two identical cells. 5. However, if two egg cells are fertilized separately, they develop to form fraternal twins. Chromosomal Abnormalities: 1. Turnerââ¬â¢s syndrome- is a rare case wherein females may be born with only 1 X chromosome (45 chromosomes instead of 46). They fail to develop sexually at puberty. They show normal intelligence but with cognitive defects like poor performance in math and spatial organization. 2. Downââ¬â¢s Syndrome- a defect which usually stems from a failure of one chromosome of a germ cell to split in the normal way to form a healthy ovum with 23 chromosomes; an ovum with 24 chromosomes is produced, and if this ovum is fertilized, the developing embryo possesses an extra chromosome (47). The condition is named after English physician J L H Down (1828-96), and is sometimes referred to as mongolism. 3. Klinefelterââ¬â¢s Syndrome- a rare case wherein the 23rd chromosome fails to divide properly giving off extra X or Y chromosome (47). An individual with an xxy 23rd chromosome is physically a male but with feminine characteristics like large breasts but with small testes incapable of producing sperms. Male with XYY chromosomes are taller and unusually aggressive than the normal XY. Sex-Linked Genes 1. Sex-Linked Genes bare genes carried on the X and Y chromosomes, and the characteristics they control. In mammals females have two X chromosomes and males an X and a Y chromosome. Women transmit one X chromosome to either sons or daughters, while men pass their X chromosome only to their daughters. a. A characteristic feature of sex-linked inheritance is thus the absence of male-to-male transmission. Most sex-linked diseases in humans are inherited as recessives; with the males the affected sex (e. g. colorblindness, baldness, hemophilia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy). 2. Hemophilia is an inherited disorder of blood coagulation, resulting from a deficiency in one of the proteins responsible for normal blood clotting. STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT STAGESAGEHIGHLIGHTS 1. Prenatal Conception to birth Rapid physical development of body and nervous system 2. Infancy Birth to 2 years Motor development. Attachment to primary caregiver. 3. Childhood 2 to 12 years Increasing ability to think logically and reason abstractly. Refinement of motor skills. Peer socialization. 4. Adolescence 13 to 20 years Thinking and reasoning are more mature like. Identity crisis. Socializations to opposite sex. STAGESAGEHIGHLIGHTS 5. Adulthood 21 to 60 years Love, marriage, career and stability. . Old Age 61 to retirement Reflection of accomplishments. Physical and mental health deteriorates. A. Prenatal Stage 1. Prenatal Period- the period from conception to birth, usually encompassing nine months of pregnancy. 2. Pregnancy is a physiological process in which females nurture their developing young within the uterus; also known as gestation. It begins when the fertilized ovum embeds itself in the uterine wall (implantation), and ends with the birth of the offspring (parturition). It lasts on average 38 weeks (9 ? onths or 266 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period, menstruation is absent (in response to circulating hormones), the uterus enlarges, the breasts increase in size in preparation for lactation, and there are other major physiological changes. 3. Fertilization is the union of two gametes to form a zygote, as occurs during sexual reproduction. 4. Zygote a one-celled organism formed by the union of a sperm and egg cell. The zygote undergoes rapid mitotic divisions with no significant growth (a process known as cleavage) and cellular differentiation, leading to development of an embryo. . Cleavage is the process by which a fertilized egg cell (zygote) divides to give rise to all the cells of an organism. The prenatal stages 1. Germinal stage the first prenatal stage that occurs from first to second week of conception. 2. Embryonic stage the second prenatal stage that occurs fr om third to eighth week of conception. 3. Fetal stage the third and final prenatal stage that occurs from ninth week of conception to birth. B. INFANCY. 1. Infancy is the period of human development from birth to two years. 2. Neonate is a newborn child. 3. Capacities of a newborn: a. Newborns have poor vision and cannot see as well as an adult until about age 2. b. Newborns pay attention to sounds particularly to human speech. c. Infants can discriminate different tastes and prefer sweets like breast milk. d. Neonate can identify odors especially that of the mother. e. Infants can learn from the moment they are born and show good memories by 3 months of age. 4. Motor Development refers to the progression of muscular coordination required for physical activities. Stages of Motor Development In Infancy AGE (months)ACTIVITIESAGE (months)ACTIVITIES Lifts head up 11 Stands alone 2. 5 Rolls over 12 Walks alone 3 Sits propped up 14 (1 yr, 2 mos) Walks backward 6 Sits without support 17 (1 yr, 5 mos) Walks up steps 6. 5 Stands holding on 20 (1 yr, 8 mos) Kicks ball forward 9 Walks holding on 10 Stands momentarily 5. Critical Periods are the crucial time periods in a personââ¬â¢s life during which specific events occur if development is to proceed normally. In fetus, t he 6 to 7 weeks is critical for normal development of the sex organs- like deficiency in hormones. Visual corrections are critical up to 7 years old. . Sensitive Periods are periods that are optimal for a particular kind of development. First year of life is a sensitive period for interpersonal attachment. 7. Temperament refers to such mood-related personality characteristics. a. Easy Temperament is a term used to describe a child who is playful, regular in his sleeping and eating patterns, and adapts readily to new situations. b. Difficult Temperament is a term used to describe a child who is irritable, has irregular sleeping and eating patterns, and responds intensely and negatively to new situations. c. Slow to warm up temperament is a term used to describe a child who is relatively inactive, tends to withdraw from new situations in a mild way, and requires more time than easy infants to new situations. 8. Attachment is used to describe an infantââ¬â¢s tendency to seek closeness to particular people (especially the mother) and to feel more secure in their presence. 9. Separation anxiety is a distress among infants when a caretaker is not nearby. 10. Sensitive Responsiveness is a characteristic of a caretaker who responds promptly when the baby cries and behaves affectionately when they pick up the baby. The caretaker also tailors their response to the babyââ¬â¢s needs. C. ADOLESCENCE 1. Adolescence refers to the period of transition from childhood to adulthood covering 13 to 20 years old. It is characterize by a rapid physical growth known as the adolescent growth spurt. 2. Puberty is a period of sexual maturation that transforms a child into a biologically mature adult capable of sexual reproduction, which takes place over a period of 3 or 4 years. a. It starts when a female has a menarche between the ages of 11 to 17 (average is 12) and when a male begin to ejaculate semen between the ages of 12 to 16 (average is 14 1/2). . Secondary sex characteristics like bodily hair patterns, pitch of voice and muscle development are evident for both males and females. c. Changes in the intellectual abilities, body proportions, and sexual urges (together with changing relationships with parents and peers) create enormous challenges. d. Psychological effects of puberty such as moodiness, inn er turmoil, and rebellion are linked directly to the hormonal changes of puberty. D. ADULTHOOD 1. Adulthood is a stage of human development from ages 21 to 60 that is marked by both maturity and change. . It involves transition in the family relationships, including adjusting to marriage parenthood and empty nest. 2. Age-related physical transitions include: changes in appearance; sensory losses (especially vision and hearing), and hormonal changes. Mental speed declines. a. Menopause is the cessation of menstruation that usually occurs between 45 and 50 years. It is often accompanied by physical (sweating, hot flushes, vaginitis) and psychogenic (depression, insomnia, fatigue) disturbances, which generally respond to estrogen therapy. . Mid-life Crisis is a difficult, turbulent period of doubts and reappraisal of oneââ¬â¢s life. E. OLD AGE 1. Old age a stage of human development which covers those 65 years old and above. 2. Ageism is discrimination on the basis of age, often res ulting in the denial of rights and services in the elderly. a. Dementia- is a brain disorder that involves losses of cognitive abilities and mental functioning. b. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease is a degenerative disorder whose progression cannot be stopped; it is irreversible and ultimately ends in death.
